We’ve been missing from the blog, but keeping up with a litter of puppies is rough!
Unfortunately yesterday afternoon we lost the smallest puppy, Preston. He was a determined little guy, but unfortunately he wasn’t thriving like the other three, and he passed away naturally in his sleep.
Dealing with his passing is sad, but we know we did what we could for sweet little Preston when he was with us, and hopefully made his two and a half weeks on this earth as good as they could be (for a puppy that young).
Fostering/animal rescue work always reminds me of the Starfish Story:
One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed
a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean.
Approaching the boy, he asked, “What are you doing?”
The youth replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean.
The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.”
“Son,” the man said, “don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t make a difference!”
After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish,
and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said…”
I made a difference for that one.”
We know we can’t save them all, but hopefully we make a difference for the ones we can help.
In happier news, the other three puppies really are doing wonderful right now. They’ve all opened their eyes, and they’re now trying to figure out how their little legs can hold up their fat puppy bellies. The puppycam (on the rescue tab of our website) is about to get a whole lot more active!
